Alternately maybe they will and it will create fun roleplay moments when the dwarf puts his foot in it. Snorri, the dwarf fighter isn't going to care about charisma at all, in fact he might not even bother using skills tied to it at all throughout the entire campaign, rather allowing the bard to do the talking instead. The drawback of having a 7 in another stat is not even a drawback at all. Whereas their fellow party members are going to feel the need to spend more increases to match the stats of the most powerful player or to max their own. In all likelihood the extra 5% becomes a bonus feat by later on in the game (potentially by the third stat increase which isn't high level for a fighter). Unless they're playing a MAD character, it's likely that they'll now focus on getting feats for their third stat increase. Consider it this way, a character who gets their primary stat to 20 at level 1 is going to spend their stat increase on their secondary stat, if that's already at 16 or 18 before they do so it's going to be maxed out soon. Plus it sets up that character for life as well. The thing is an extra +1 in 5e is a pretty big deal. And that edge is going to be an insurmountable one without magic items to mitigate that difference. Now it may not be the case in all groups but one character having a "base" edge over the others can lead to friction. I get how this draft system encourages players to co-operate and removes the variance of dice rolls for stats, but a standard array gives everyone equal opportunity to shine and build their character and an equal playing field. What's wrong with using the standard array of 15 14 13 12 10 8? And customize the pick orders and stat pool to your liking! If you feel like it, let your players trade stat point arrays after the draft! Run your own example to calculate your own results to see if my system is fair. Player 4 is the only player with two 16s but is also has two under 10s to compensate. However due to them picking later in the second and third round neither of these players ended up with a second stat over of 16 and over, player 1 even ended up with a 9 and a 7! Player 3 perhaps has the weakest stat line with still only 1 ability score over 16 however, their odd stat array could potentially become the best overall with gaining level 4 and/or some gear. In this example players 1 and 2 who got first and second pick both went for the highest given stats in the pool, 18-7 and 17-10. This ensures that if each player is choosing the optimal stats for their character, the player going last will get a chance to catch up with the rest. However, it wouldn't be fair on the other players if the lucky duck got to pick first every round! So instead we will use the following chart to determine pick orders: To begin each player rolls a d20 and the highest roll picks first and the lowest picks last and then we go into the next round of picking. Most of my players will end up with average stats, which we will see in the examples section! Feel free to make your own stat pool. This pool has few really good picks and not many bad ones. This gives a competitive feeling to the draft! The following is the pool that I use: Each stat array is not created equal and some are just better than others. Example of a pick is 18-7, this means that a player will an 18 and a seven to their stat array and have 4 more stat points to choose. In this version of determining players ability score, we have players take turns choosing their stats from a provided pool of set stats.
